Iraq the Vote

About the Petition

This page has answers to frequently
asked questions about the petition. For
additional information, please see:

What's the difference between this petition and the referendum?

The petition calls for a national referendum in which Iraqi citizens can vote for or against the presence of coalition troops. Anyone is welcome to sign the petition, but only Iraqi citizens will be able to vote in the national referendum.

Why call for a referendum instead of a troop withdrawal?

Compared with troop reductions proposed by the U.S. government and leading presidential candidates, an Iraqi referendum is more likely to draw bipartisan support and less likely to leave residual combat troops in Iraq. For a detailed discussion of the referendum and the reasoning behind it, please see About the Referendum.

If I want to sign, do I need to have an email address?

Yes. To make sure that no one is added without consent, we email signers a note asking them to confirm their desire to sign the petition. If you don't have an email address but would still like to support the petition, please see How to Help.

Will my email address ever be shared with others?

IraqTheVote.org has never shared email addresses with a third party, and there are no plans to do so in the future. For further information, please see our Privacy Policy.

I just signed the petiton, so why doesn't my name appear as a signer?

In order to complete the signature process, you must click on the confirmation link that was emailed to you after signing. Once you confirm your signature, you should see your name if you reload the List of Signers page.

Why didn't I receive the confirmation email after signing the petition?

If an hour has passed and you haven't received a confirmation message, try signing again. If you receive a message saying that you already signed, look in your email trash or junk folder, just in case the message was mistaken as spam. Finally, if neither suggestion solves the problem, please Contact Us and we will try to help.

Can I sign the petition more than once?

No, but you can generate multiple signatures by asking other people to sign the petition. If you know of others who might support the petition, please ask them to consider signing it. We also appreciate efforts to publicize the petition via social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.

Can organizations support the petition?

Yes. Organizations can support the petition by having a representative sign on behalf of the group, and by encouraging their individual members to sign the petition. Either or both forms of support are appreciated.

Is the petition connected with any political party?

No. The petition is a nonpartisan project developed by staff members of Social Psychology Network, a nonprofit educational organization whose mission is "to promote peace, social justice, and sustainable living through public education, research, and the advancement of psychology."

What does the petition have to do with social psychology?

Social psychology is the scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another, and a central topic of social research is conflict resolution. For information on how social science research can help resolve international conflict, please see the Related Links page.

Is the petition sectarian?

No. The petition was developed by people with diverse backgrounds and beliefs, and all visitors to this web site are invited to sign it, including people who are Sunni, Shiite, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, members of another religion, or unaffiliated with any religion.
